The Living Desert
Monday, September 3rd, 2007Guess who is vacationing in beautiful Palm Springs while California is having a major heat wave? That’s right… Ava. Good timing, huh? Needless to say, it is hot hot hot. David and Carrie stopped by and joined us for an outing to the Living Desert Wildlife Park.
Our first stop was the small reptile and amphibian building. Ava’s first animal of the day was a turtle. She immediately tried to grab it. The glass stopped her attempt which she didn’t appreciate but I think the turtle felt a little differently.

And then came the fishes… Ava’s favorite.

As soon as we left the air conditioned building, we melted from the heat. The plan to introduce Ava to handfuls and handfuls of beautiful animals pretty much melted with us. We ended up spending most of the day running from each outdoor exhibit to each ‘cool zone’ that sprinkled the park. But we weren’t the only ones who enjoyed the misters and shade… so did the ants… who ended up attacking our feet… which explains why Dan and David are dancing in this photo. hehe.

Ava really enjoyed the misters. When the mist hit her face, Ava would blink like crazy women.

Here is our cooled off baby… red cheeks and all.

Ava ended up in an African village where she went bongo crazy.

We decided to leave the cool zones and endure the 114 degree heat in order to visit the petting zoo that had a collection of sheep, goats, and miniature donkeys.

Most of the animals stood in shade and looked like statues. Ava didn’t have a reaction for them since they didn’t have one for her.

Check out who got a kiss on the head from a goat?!?! Just kidding. Lucky shot.

Most of the goats had no reaction but there was one goat who smiled for us.

For one final cool down, we hung out at the Living Desert store and entertained Ava with animal puppets. I guess someone was feeling a bit guilty for spending more time with the misters than with the animals.

The day ended with a much needed nap in a perfectly cooled hotel room.
